In a recent press conference held in Beijing, Wu Qian, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of National Defense, issued strong remarks against the Philippines’ actions in the South China Sea and criticized the United States for its perceived interference in regional affairs.
Wu emphasized that “there is no bigger factor than U.S. interference in causing turbulence in the South China Sea,” attributing the recent escalation of tensions to the Philippines’ “harassment and provocations.” He asserted China’s stance, stating that the nation is “fully prepared for any emergency” and will “resolutely safeguard China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.”
The tension centers around the contested waters of the South China Sea, a vital maritime corridor rich in resources and strategic importance. The comments from the Chinese defense spokesperson were in response to Manila’s “Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept” and accusations that China obstructed the Philippines’ resupply missions to the Ren’ai Reef, known in China as Ren’ai Jiao.
Wu expressed concern over the United States’ involvement, accusing it of “provoking confrontation” and “sending military vessels to the South China Sea to stir up troubles.” He remarked that such actions “seriously undermine regional peace and stability.” Emphasizing China’s position, Wu stated, “The U.S. is in no position to interfere, and the military cooperation between the U.S. and the Philippines must not harm China’s sovereignty and maritime rights and interests.”
Addressing the Philippines directly, Wu accused the Southeast Asian nation of violating international law and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC). He alleged that the Philippines “frequently infringed upon China’s sovereignty, made provocations, and spread misinformation to mislead the international community.” Wu cautioned that the Philippines is “straying further down a dangerous path” and that “provocations will only do themselves more harm than good.”
Despite the rising tensions, Wu reiterated China’s commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue and consultation. “We have every reason to believe that with concerted efforts of regional countries, the South China Sea issue will surely be settled,” he said, underscoring a vision for regional cooperation. “This is the inevitable trend of our times.”
The South China Sea remains a focal point of geopolitical tensions, with multiple nations asserting overlapping claims. The area is not only pivotal for international trade but also holds significant economic potential due to its abundant fishing grounds and potential energy reserves. Observers note that the resolution of these disputes is critical for maintaining peace and stability in the region.
