China and Sri Lanka Agree to Deepen Friendship and Boost Cooperation

On Wednesday, Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena in Beijing, marking a significant step in strengthening the ties between the two nations. The leaders agreed to deepen their long-standing friendship and promote greater cooperation across various sectors.

President Xi emphasized the historical bond between China and Sri Lanka, noting that the two peoples share a natural affinity. “Consolidating and promoting China-Sri Lanka relations serves the fundamental interests and reflects the common expectations of our peoples,” he stated.

Highlighting the spirit of the Rubber-Rice Pact—a historic agreement that symbolizes “independence, self-reliance, unity, and mutual support”—President Xi expressed China’s willingness to work with Sri Lanka to enhance political mutual trust and expand practical cooperation. He underscored the importance of advancing high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, which has been a cornerstone of China’s international development strategy.

The two leaders discussed deepening cooperation in logistics, energy, and industry, as well as strengthening exchanges in the digital economy, green economy, clean energy, culture and tourism, and the marine economy. President Xi affirmed China’s support for Sri Lanka in safeguarding its national sovereignty and exploring a path of modernization tailored to its national conditions. “China will continue to provide assistance to Sri Lanka’s economic and social development to the best of its ability,” he assured.

President Xi also expressed China’s intent to expand imports of Sri Lankan specialty and high-quality products, encouraging Chinese enterprises to invest in Sri Lanka. He called for the Sri Lankan side to provide a fair and transparent business environment for Chinese investors, fostering mutual growth and development.

Prime Minister Gunawardena conveyed Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening the strategic cooperative partnership with China. He acknowledged China’s significant role in Sri Lanka’s development and expressed gratitude for its support in economic and social sectors.

The meeting between President Xi and Prime Minister Gunawardena signifies a renewed dedication to collaboration, setting the stage for enhanced bilateral relations that will benefit both nations and contribute to regional stability and prosperity.
