China Welcomes UN Security Council’s Call for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza

China has welcomed the United Nations Security Council’s (UNSC) adoption of a resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution, which garnered 14 out of 15 votes in favor, marks the first time the UNSC has called for a ceasefire since the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on October 7, 2023.

At a regular press briefing on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian expressed support for the UNSC’s decision. “This resolution aligns with the correct direction of the UNSC’s actions and meets the widespread expectations of the international community,” Lin stated.

Emphasizing the binding nature of Security Council resolutions, Lin called on all parties involved to adhere to their obligations under the UN Charter. “We urge the concerned parties to fulfill their duties and take appropriate actions as required by the resolution,” he said.

China urged nations with significant influence to play a constructive role in facilitating the ceasefire. “We expect influential states to use all necessary and effective means at their disposal to support the implementation of the resolution,” Lin added.

Lin also called on the UNSC to remain vigilant regarding the situation in Gaza and to be prepared for further necessary actions to ensure the resolution is implemented promptly and comprehensively. “China will continue to work with all parties to strive for an early ceasefire in Gaza, alleviate the humanitarian situation, and advance the implementation of the two-state solution,” he concluded.
