Beijing, China — In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, China’s top legislator Zhao Leji met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena on Tuesday. The meeting, held in Beijing, underscored the enduring friendship and cooperation between the two nations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1957.
Zhao Leji, chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, highlighted the consistent and steady relationship between China and Sri Lanka, emphasizing that it has remained resilient despite changes in the international landscape. He expressed China’s readiness to work collaboratively with Sri Lanka to enhance political mutual trust and to continue supporting each other on issues concerning their core interests.
“China stands ready to build the Belt and Road with high quality and deepen cultural and people-to-people exchanges to promote bilateral relations for more development,” Zhao stated, pointing to the ambitious infrastructure and economic initiative that aims to connect Asia with Africa and Europe through land and maritime networks.
The discussion also touched upon the importance of cooperation between their legislative bodies. Zhao noted that increased communication at different levels would enhance understanding and trust, providing legal guarantees for cooperation in various fields. “The NPC of China is prepared to strengthen communication with the Parliament of Sri Lanka and enhance coordination during multilateral occasions,” he added.
Prime Minister Gunawardena expressed profound gratitude for China’s long-term support and assistance. He affirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to the one-China principle and conveyed eagerness to deepen cooperation across various sectors, including exchanges between legislative bodies. “We aim to inject new impetus into our longstanding friendship,” Gunawardena remarked.
