In a historic meeting in Beijing, China and the Republic of Nauru have pledged to enhance cooperation across various sectors, including trade, infrastructure, and environmental protection. The commitment was made during Nauruan President David Adeang’s state visit to China, marking the first such visit since the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two nations earlier this year. President Adeang met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where both leaders expressed a strong desire to deepen mutual trust and work towards shared development goals. “Standing at a new historical starting point, we agree to strengthen political mutual trust and mutually beneficial cooperation,” the two leaders affirmed in a joint statement issued on Tuesday. The discussions highlighted the significance of the one-China principle, with Nauru reiterating its recognition of the government of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government of China and acknowledging Taiwan as an inalienable part of China’s territory. Nauru affirmed its opposition to “Taiwan independence” and external interference in China’s internal affairs. Economic collaboration was a key focus, with China welcoming Nauru’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative. Both countries agreed to explore opportunities in trade, investment, infrastructure development, agriculture, fisheries, science-based mineral development, and environmental protection. China has also expressed support for Nauru joining the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. The two nations emphasized the importance of addressing global challenges such as climate change, advocating for international cooperation under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement. They also called for strengthened ties in culture, education, health, sports, tourism, youth engagement, media, and human resources to foster people-to-people connections. President Adeang praised China’s development achievements and expressed support for initiatives such as the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping. “China’s path to modernization offers new options and solutions for developing countries seeking independent development,” he remarked. The visit signifies a renewed commitment to collaborative growth and underscores the growing importance of partnerships within the Pacific Islands region. Both countries agreed to work together to promote peace, development, and stability, advocating for principles of mutual respect and non-interference in internal affairs. As China and Nauru embark on this strengthened relationship, the global community watches with interest, anticipating the positive impacts of their cooperation on regional development and international relations.
