Brussels, Belgium — Chinese Vice Premier Zhang Guoqing has called for international collaboration to extend the benefits of nuclear energy to more nations. Speaking at the first Nuclear Energy Summit in Brussels on Thursday, Zhang emphasized China’s readiness to work with global partners to advance nuclear energy development worldwide.

Zhang, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, highlighted the unique advantages of nuclear energy in addressing climate change and ensuring energy security. “Nuclear energy plays a crucial role in our pursuit of a sustainable future,” he stated. “China is committed to a rational, coordinated, and balanced nuclear security strategy, promoting the active, safe, and orderly development of nuclear power.”

He outlined China’s efforts in advancing carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, noting that the nation is making significant contributions to the global transition towards green and low-carbon energy. “Our actions demonstrate China’s dedication to environmental responsibility and energy innovation,” Zhang said.

Addressing the summit attendees from over 30 countries, including heads of state, government leaders, and international organization representatives, Zhang urged enhanced cooperation in nuclear energy technology innovation. He stressed the importance of building resilient and secure global industrial and supply chains for nuclear energy. “China is willing to increase technical support for developing countries, ensuring more nations can benefit from nuclear energy development,” he affirmed.

The summit, recognized as the highest-level meeting dedicated exclusively to nuclear energy, concluded with the adoption of a joint declaration on nuclear energy. The declaration underscores a shared commitment to harnessing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and advancing global energy security.

On the sidelines of the summit, Vice Premier Zhang met with Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo and Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The meetings included in-depth discussions on enhancing dialogue and fostering practical cooperation in nuclear energy and security.

“By working together, we can build a clean and beautiful world characterized by lasting peace, universal security, common prosperity, openness, and inclusiveness,” Zhang remarked, reiterating China’s commitment to global collaboration.
