China has expressed its support for the timely convening of an international peace conference recognized by both Russia and Ukraine, aiming to bring an end to the ongoing crisis. Li Hui, the special representative of the Chinese government on Eurasian affairs, made this announcement during a press briefing in Beijing on Friday.
Li Hui recently completed his second round of shuttle diplomacy, a 10-day journey that began on March 2. During this trip, he visited Russia, the European Union headquarters in Brussels, Poland, Ukraine, Germany, and France, engaging with leaders and diplomats to explore pathways toward a political settlement.
At the press briefing, which was attended by diplomats from 78 countries, including Russia and Ukraine, Li shared insights from his discussions. “All parties appreciate China’s shuttle mediation efforts and expect China to play a greater constructive role,” he stated. Li emphasized that as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and a common friend of both Russia and Ukraine, China is uniquely positioned to facilitate dialogue.
According to Li, both Russia and Ukraine recognize the importance of negotiation in resolving the crisis. “The Russian side expressed its appreciation of China’s second round of shuttle diplomacy and its belief that the crisis will ultimately be resolved through negotiation,” Li said. He added that Ukraine refuted claims that China is deliberately distancing itself from Ukraine and appreciated China’s balanced stance on the crisis.
Li noted that while achieving a ceasefire and ending the conflict remains challenging, there is growing consensus on the need for peace talks. “China is ready to continue to play its unique role and contribute Chinese wisdom and strength to promote a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis,” he affirmed.
This marks Li Hui’s continued commitment to facilitating peace in the region. His first round of shuttle diplomacy took place last May, where he visited Ukraine, Poland, France, Germany, Brussels, and Russia to encourage dialogue and seek common ground among the involved parties.
