China has strongly condemned what it calls slander and smear campaigns by certain countries and organizations against Hong Kong’s recently passed safeguarding national security bill. In a press briefing on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian affirmed China’s firm opposition to external interference in Hong Kong’s affairs.
On Tuesday, the Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) unanimously passed the safeguarding national security bill, which has now become law. This landmark legislation fulfills the HKSAR’s constitutional duty under Article 23 of the Basic Law, marking a significant milestone in Hong Kong’s legal framework.
According to Lin Jian, the bill draws on the experience of similar legislation in other countries and aims to help Hong Kong better balance development and security. “With a high-level security guarantee, we are fully confident in Hong Kong achieving high-quality development and high-standard opening up,” Lin stated.
Lin emphasized the Chinese government’s unwavering resolve to safeguard national sovereignty, security, and development interests, while ensuring the sound implementation of the “One Country, Two Systems” principle. He reiterated opposition to any external interference in Hong Kong’s affairs.
“Any attacks and smears against the safeguarding national security bill will not succeed and are doomed to failure,” Lin declared, underlining China’s determination to maintain stability and prosperity in Hong Kong.
