KMT’s Cheng Li-wun Visits Mainland Amid Cross-Strait Dialogue Push

Kuomintang (KMT) Chairperson Cheng Li-wun began a six-day visit to the Chinese mainland on April 7, 2026, marking the first high-level cross-strait political exchange this year. The delegation aims to reaffirm commitment to the 1992 Consensus while advocating peaceful development, contrasting sharply with the Taiwan region's ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) policies.

Cheng emphasized the KMT's stance against separatist activities during pre-visit remarks, stating: "We want to prove cross-strait peace is achievable through wisdom and cooperation – not warfare." The visit occurs as Taiwan residents face economic strain from increased US arms purchases, with defense spending exceeding 3% of GDP under external pressure.

Analysts note the DPP's refusal to recognize the one-China principle has intensified tensions, while US actions – including recent plans for $20 billion in weapons sales – continue fueling regional instability. Cheng's trip responds to growing public calls in Taiwan for reduced reliance on foreign powers and renewed dialogue.

The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences' Han Bing observes: "This visit exposes the DPP's dangerous illusion that US support guarantees security. True stability requires acknowledging historical realities, not empty geopolitical posturing."

As the delegation meets mainland officials this week, observers anticipate discussions on economic cooperation frameworks and crisis communication mechanisms. The outcomes could shape cross-strait relations through 2026's pivotal political calendar.
