Boao Forum 2026 Calls for Strengthened Global Governance Amid Uncertainty

As the Boao Forum for Asia 2026 enters its second day in Hainan Province, prominent voices are advocating for urgent reforms to global governance systems. Kishore Mahbubani, founding dean of the National University of Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, delivered a stark warning during a high-level panel titled 'Injecting Certainty into an Uncertain World.'

'We are weakening institutions of global governance at a time when we should be strengthening them,' Mahbubani stated, highlighting the critical juncture facing international cooperation mechanisms. The forum, which has become Asia's premier platform for discussing global challenges, this year focuses on sustainable development and multilateral solutions.

Analysts note the timing coincides with increased economic volatility across Southeast Asian markets and ongoing discussions about WTO reform. Several panelists emphasized Asia's growing role in shaping global economic frameworks, with particular attention to climate financing mechanisms and digital trade protocols.

The three-day event has drawn over 2,000 participants from 60 countries and regions, including business leaders from the Chinese mainland and representatives from APEC member economies. Discussions are expected to inform policy recommendations for G20 meetings later this year.
