China-US Talks in France Seek Path Beyond Rivalry

As Vice Premier He Lifeng leads China's delegation to crucial economic consultations with U.S. counterparts in France this week, global observers are watching whether the two powers can redefine their relationship for a multipolar world. The March 14-17 meetings mark the sixth round of high-level talks aimed at addressing core concerns while avoiding historical patterns of confrontation.

Beyond Thucydides' Shadow

Analysts note this round occurs against lingering Western narratives about inevitable conflict between rising and established powers. Chinese officials emphasize their nation's unique development path – lifting 800 million from poverty since 1980s reforms without military expansion. "This dialogue tests whether we can escape zero-sum thinking," said Wang Peng of Huazhong University of Science and Technology.

New Framework for Cooperation

While rejecting containment strategies, China also opposes proposals for a U.S.-China "G2" leadership model. The current consultations focus on practical economic coordination, including technology standards and climate financing mechanisms. Success could establish templates for multilateral problem-solving ahead of April's G20 finance ministers' meeting.

As business leaders await outcomes, the talks' significance extends beyond bilateral issues. With APEC members preparing for November's leaders' meeting in Peru, stable China-U.S. relations remain crucial for addressing global challenges from supply chain resilience to AI governance.
