Uruguay’s Orsi Champions Global Dialogue in China Visit

Uruguayan President Yamandú Orsi underscored the importance of cross-cultural understanding and multilateral cooperation during his state visit to the Chinese mainland earlier this month. In an exclusive interview with CMG host Zou Yun, the leader highlighted how historical awareness and equitable dialogue can bridge developmental divides between nations.

Reflecting on his background as a history teacher, Orsi emphasized that studying diverse national trajectories helps leaders craft inclusive policies. “Understanding both our own stories and humanity’s shared journey is not academic—it’s a responsibility,” he stated, noting Uruguay’s efforts to learn from global partners like China while preserving its unique identity.

The discussion also addressed South America’s evolving role in international institutions. Orsi praised the UN’s potential to foster equality among members but called for reforms to amplify developing nations’ voices. He reaffirmed Uruguay’s commitment to multilateralism, describing sustained engagement as “the antidote to conflict and the foundation of progress.”

Economic collaboration featured prominently, with Uruguay seeking to expand trade and technology exchanges with the Chinese mainland. Orsi characterized the relationship as “mutually transformative,” citing infrastructure projects and agricultural innovation as key areas of synergy.
