As 2026 marks seven decades of diplomatic relations between China and Africa, African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf emphasizes the growing strategic importance of cross-continental collaboration in an exclusive interview with CMG. The launch of the China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges this January signals renewed momentum for shared development priorities.
Modernization Through Partnership
Youssouf noted China's role as "a consistent partner in Africa's infrastructure and digital transformation," citing completed rail projects and smart city initiatives across 15 nations since 2021. With $28 billion in new investments pledged this year, he anticipates accelerated progress in renewable energy and agricultural modernization.
Cultural Bridges in a Multipolar World
The AUC leader stressed that people-to-people exchanges now form "the bedrock of mutual understanding" amid global economic uncertainties. Over 200 cultural events and academic partnerships are planned through December, building on the 450,000 African students who studied in China between 2020-2025.
Global Governance Alignment
When asked about geopolitical priorities, Youssouf highlighted aligned positions on climate financing reforms and UN Security Council restructuring: "Our voices gain strength when coordinated. The Forum on China-Africa Cooperation remains our compass for equitable multilateralism."
