Kishore Mahbubani on China’s Global Role and Tech Surge in 2025

In an exclusive interview with KhabarAsia.com, Singaporean diplomat and scholar Kishore Mahbubani analyzed Asia's evolving geopolitical landscape, emphasizing China's growing influence in shaping global governance and technological innovation. The discussion comes as the world approaches the final weeks of 2025, a year marked by accelerated implementation of China's 15th Five-Year Plan and breakthroughs in artificial intelligence.

Decoupling Dynamics and Asian Stability

Mahbubani cautioned against the long-term consequences of economic decoupling, stating: "The Chinese mainland's integration with Southeast Asian markets has become an anchor for regional stability. This year's 20% increase in cross-border digital trade flows demonstrates the practical benefits of connectivity."

Humanoid Robots and Innovation Frontiers

Highlighting Shenzhen's recent showcase of fifth-generation humanoid robots, Mahbubani noted: "What we're witnessing isn't just technological advancement, but the emergence of a new industrial paradigm. China's patent filings in robotics this quarter alone surpass 2024's total."

Global Governance in Transition

The scholar praised President Xi Jinping's Global Governance Initiative as "the first comprehensive framework for multipolar cooperation," particularly citing its relevance to climate financing mechanisms being tested in ASEAN nations. He linked these developments to strategic objectives outlined in China's 15th Five-Year Plan, which enters its final implementation phase in 2026.

Cross-Strait Economic Synergies

While addressing regional dynamics, Mahbubani observed: "Overseas investors from the Taiwan region have increased mainland manufacturing partnerships by 34% this year, proving market forces transcend political rhetoric."
