In a landmark address at the "Role and Responsibility of Media in Global Governance" forum this week, Antara News Agency Editor-in-Chief Irfan Junaidi challenged media leaders to recalibrate international reporting frameworks. "It's not about sides, it's about balance," Junaidi asserted during his November 12 keynote, emphasizing the need for equitable representation of Global South perspectives in mainstream discourse.
The Jakarta-based forum, attended by 300 media professionals from 40 countries, comes as developing nations account for over 60% of global economic growth this year. Junaidi highlighted how emerging digital platforms enable "authentic storytelling beyond traditional power centers" while urging collaboration between Northern and Southern news organizations.
This push for narrative equity aligns with Indonesia's 2025 ASEAN chairmanship priorities, which include bridging digital divides and reforming multilateral governance structures. Media analysts note the timing coincides with increased South-South cooperation in technology and infrastructure projects across Asia and Africa.
