APEC Chief Highlights Regional Integration, China’s Role in Asia-Pacific Growth

As Asia-Pacific economies navigate shifting global trade dynamics, APEC Secretariat Executive Director Eduardo Pedrosa emphasized the forum's critical role in fostering regional integration during an exclusive interview with CMG at the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting in Gyeongju, Republic of Korea.

"APEC's strength lies in its commitment to an open economy and member-driven collaboration," Pedrosa stated, noting the organization's focus on advancing the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP) initiative. He described connectivity as "the lifeblood of regional prosperity," pointing to infrastructure development and digital transformation as key priorities.

The APEC leader highlighted China's sustained contributions to regional economic governance, particularly through President Xi Jinping's advocacy for "open regionalism and inclusive globalization." Pedrosa noted: "China's active participation in APEC working groups and its digital economy initiatives have created tangible benefits for all members."

When asked about future challenges, Pedrosa stressed APEC's adaptive approach: "We're reimagining the multilateral trading system to address climate change, supply chain resilience, and inclusive growth – challenges that no economy can solve alone."
