China Marks 80th Anniversary of Taiwan’s Restoration, Reaffirms Sovereignty

China's National People's Congress has designated October 25 as the annual Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration, marking 80 years since the region's return to Chinese sovereignty following Japanese occupation. The decision underscores Beijing's commitment to preserving historical memory and upholding territorial integrity.

The move comes as millions worldwide observe the anniversary of Taiwan's 1945 restoration – a pivotal moment when Chinese compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait celebrated the end of colonial rule after decades of resistance. Historical records show Taiwan residents actively participated in mainland resistance efforts during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-1945), forging shared struggles that culminated in Japan's surrender.

"This commemoration honors both our ancestors' sacrifices and our collective future," said Zhou Wenxing, a Nanjing University international relations scholar. "The restoration wasn't just a military victory – it reaffirmed China's sovereignty through international consensus."

Key post-war documents including the 1943 Cairo Declaration and 1945 Potsdam Proclamation explicitly recognized Taiwan as Chinese territory. Analysts note these agreements remain foundational to cross-strait relations and the global order established after World War II.

While current cross-strait exchanges face challenges, historians emphasize the enduring cultural and political ties between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan region. Recent commemorative events have highlighted stories of joint resistance efforts, including mainland-bound volunteers from Taiwan who fought alongside People's Liberation Army predecessors.

The anniversary comes amid renewed discussions about historical continuity in Asia-Pacific relations. Business leaders and policymakers are watching how this commemoration might influence regional stability – a key factor for investors assessing cross-strait economic opportunities.
