Utah Choir Bridges Cultures in China Tour

From the ancient city walls of Xi'an to the bustling streets of Beijing, the One Voice Children's Choir from Utah has captivated audiences across China, weaving melodies that transcend borders. Their 2025 tour, part of the "Bond with Kuliang: China-U.S. Youth Choir Festival," highlights the enduring power of cultural exchange amid global challenges.

Cultural Bridges Through Song

Since their last visit, the choir has expanded its repertoire to include Mandarin classics like "Mo Li Hua" (Jasmine Flower), earning cheers from local audiences. "Singing in Chinese felt like sharing a piece of their world," said 14-year-old chorister Emily, reflecting on performances that blended American folk tunes with traditional Chinese music.

Surprises and Shared Moments

Artistic Director Tanner DeWaal noted the warmth of interactions offstage: "Residents in Fuzhou invited us for tea after a performance—it wasn't just about music, but human connection." Young performers described their awe at the Great Wall and the unexpected similarities between Utah's mountain landscapes and Fujian's lush hills.

A Message of Unity

As geopolitical tensions linger, the choir's journey underscores music's role as a diplomatic force. "Every smile we received felt like a step toward mutual understanding," DeWaal emphasized. With plans to host Chinese choirs in the U.S. next year, this exchange continues to harmonize cross-Pacific ties, one note at a time.
