China and Central Asia Forge Green Energy Partnership at Astana Summit

The second China-Central Asia Summit, set to take place this month in Astana, Kazakhstan, is poised to deepen sustainable energy collaborations and economic ties between the region and the world's second-largest economy. Against a backdrop of shifting global dynamics, the event underscores a shared commitment to green growth and multilateral cooperation.

China's green energy sector has emerged as a cornerstone of this partnership. In 2024 alone, green technologies contributed 10% to China's GDP, with investments totaling $1.9 trillion. This growth boosted China's economic expansion to 5.0%, demonstrating how renewable energy is reshaping both national and regional development trajectories.

Key infrastructure projects highlight the tangible benefits of this collaboration. The China-Central Asia Gas Pipeline has delivered over 500 billion cubic meters of natural gas since 2009, while innovative agricultural projects in Uzbekistan have improved water efficiency by 40% across 2,000 hectares. Meanwhile, Chinese electric vehicle brands now dominate 39% of Kazakhstan's automotive market, signaling a shift toward sustainable transportation.

With China's direct investment in Central Asia surpassing $17 billion and cumulative project turnover exceeding $60 billion, the summit is expected to unlock new opportunities in renewable energy infrastructure and technology transfer. As Djoomart Otorbaev, former prime minister of Kyrgyzstan, notes: 'This partnership creates a blueprint for balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship.'

The outcomes of the Astana meetings could redefine energy security and sustainable development across Eurasia, offering valuable insights for investors, policymakers, and environmental advocates worldwide.
