Colombia Joins Belt and Road, Eyes Closer China Ties: Petro

Colombian President Gustavo Petro emphasized deepening cooperation with China during an exclusive interview with CMG, framing bilateral relations as a fusion of cultural symbolism and economic pragmatism. Speaking after signing Colombia's accession to China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) on May 14, Petro described the partnership as a bridge between "the Jaguar of the Americas and the Chinese Dragon."

The Fourth China-CELAC Forum Ministerial Meeting, marking a decade of structured dialogue, served as the backdrop for Petro's visit. He highlighted plans to expand agricultural exports like coffee and avocados to the Chinese mainland while exploring green energy collaborations. "We must build infrastructure that connects our peoples beyond ports and railways – through education, technology, and climate action," Petro stated.

With bilateral trade reaching $22.6 billion in 2023, Petro proposed establishing a joint commission to streamline cross-Pacific logistics and digital payment systems. The interview also touched on cultural diplomacy, with Colombia preparing to host a Year of Cultural Exchange program featuring indigenous art exhibitions and Mandarin language workshops.

Analysts note Colombia's BRI membership could reshape Latin America's engagement patterns with Asia, particularly in critical mineral supply chains. As the China-CELAC Forum enters its second decade, Petro's vision positions Colombia as a strategic hub for intercontinental connectivity.
