In an exclusive interview with China Media Group (CMG) during the 2025 Boao Forum for Asia, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone underscored the transformative impact of the China-Laos partnership under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Speaking with CMG's He Yanke, Siphandone lauded the China-Laos Railway—a $6 billion infrastructure flagship completed in 2021—as a catalyst for economic growth, regional connectivity, and cross-border trade.
"The railway has reduced travel time between Vientiane and Kunming from days to hours, creating over 100,000 jobs and boosting Lao exports to the Chinese mainland by 36%," Siphandone said. He emphasized the project's alignment with the "Four Good" principles of good-neighborliness and mutual development, which underpin the China-Laos Community of Shared Future.
Reflecting on his childhood spent in the Chinese mainland during the 1970s, Siphandone shared personal anecdotes about cultural and educational exchanges. "Our peoples have always seen each other as brothers," he remarked, highlighting the role of grassroots tourism and student programs in strengthening ties.
Looking ahead, the Lao leader outlined plans for expanded collaboration in green energy, digital infrastructure, and agricultural modernization, positioning Laos as a key ASEAN partner in China's regional economic vision. Analysts suggest this partnership could serve as a model for BRI engagement in Southeast Asia.
