Fiji’s Speaker Praises China’s Poverty Relief, Backs One-China Policy

In an exclusive interview with CMG, Speaker of the Fiji Parliament Filimone Jitoko highlighted China’s innovative approaches to development and poverty alleviation, drawing parallels to challenges faced by Pacific island nations. Jitoko’s recent visits to Beijing, Shanghai, and Shaanxi offered firsthand insights into China’s strategies for relocating communities from inaccessible regions and upskilling populations through education—initiatives he believes could guide Fiji’s development roadmap.

Celebrating 50 years of diplomatic ties, Jitoko reaffirmed Fiji’s commitment to the one-China principle, emphasizing mutual respect and collaboration. "China’s ability to transform lives through relocation and education is a model for resilience," he noted, praising China’s role in global poverty reduction efforts.

With climate change threatening Fiji’s coastal communities, Jitoko emphasized the urgency of technological partnerships. He expressed optimism about China’s advancements in sustainable infrastructure and renewable energy, calling them "critical tools" for island nations battling rising sea levels. The interview also touched on China’s Belt and Road Initiative, which has bolstered connectivity and economic opportunities across the Global South.
