The World Economic Forum (WEF) is set to convene its annual meeting from January 20 to 24 in Davos, Switzerland. This prestigious gathering is expected to bring together nearly 3,000 leaders from politics, academia, and business, including 60 heads of state and government.
Historically, the WEF has served as a catalyst for significant global discussions and agreements. In 1992, it was the stage for the first meeting outside South Africa between Nelson Mandela and F.W. de Klerk, a handshake that symbolized a pivotal moment in the fight against apartheid. In 1998, amidst a financial crisis, the concept of a dialogue platform between developed and developing nations took root in Davos, eventually leading to the formation of the Group of Twenty (G20).
As we look ahead to Davos 2025, the agenda is anticipated to be even more critical amid growing geopolitical and economic uncertainties, trade tensions, cultural polarization, and climate challenges. These issues are becoming increasingly complex and interconnected, demanding collaborative solutions.
This year’s theme, “Collaborating for the Intelligent Age,” underscores the rapid transformation of our world through converging technologies such as quantum computing, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence. These advancements offer unprecedented opportunities to enhance productivity, improve living standards, and reduce poverty and inequality. However, they also pose risks of further dividing humanity if not managed inclusively.
The forum will focus on five key priorities:
- Rethinking Growth: Exploring sustainable and inclusive economic models for the future.
- Industries in the Intelligent Age: Adapting industries to leverage technological innovations.
- Investing in People: Emphasizing education, skills development, and human capital.
- Safeguarding the Planet: Addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainability.
- Rebuilding Trust: Strengthening social cohesion and restoring confidence in institutions.
The upcoming WEF meeting aims to foster dialogue and collaboration among global leaders to address these pressing issues. By uniting diverse perspectives, the forum seeks to harness the potential of the Intelligent Age for the betterment of all.
