From Visitor to Resident: Uwe Kräuter’s 50-Year Journey in the Chinese Mainland

In 1974, when the Chinese mainland was a destination few foreigners ventured to, a young German sociology student named Uwe Kräuter embarked on a journey that would become a lifelong adventure. Originally planning a two-year stay, Kräuter found himself captivated by the culture and people, turning those years into five decades of living and working in China.

Inspired by tales from his grandfather, a sailor who had traveled to China, Kräuter’s fascination with the country began in his childhood. “He told me stories about China and I loved them,” he reminisced. While studying at Heidelberg University, an unexpected opportunity arose when a Swiss couple, friends working for the Foreign Languages Press in Beijing, informed him of an opening. “The publishing house contacted me, and I agreed,” Kräuter said, seizing the chance to experience China firsthand.

Adjusting to life in the Chinese mainland was both challenging and exhilarating.
