Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa’s recent visit to the Chinese mainland has energized the partnership between Samoa and China, signaling a new chapter in China-Pacific Island ties. The two nations have pledged to strengthen cooperation across key sectors, including education, agricultural modernization, fisheries, aquaculture, marine environmental protection, mangrove conservation, and smart city management.
During her meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Prime Minister Mata’afa emphasized the importance of collaboration in Samoa’s vital areas of development. President Xi affirmed China’s commitment to supporting Samoa’s economic and social development, highlighting opportunities in trade, investment, agriculture, and fisheries to achieve common growth. Mata’afa acknowledged that the relationship with China is a crucial component of Samoa’s progress in every area of its development.
A significant milestone in international environmental cooperation was achieved as Samoa, alongside 27 other nations, signed a historic agreement to establish an International Mangrove Center in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. This collaboration with China on mangrove protection enhances the island nation’s environmental sustainability and coastal resilience, addressing critical challenges posed by climate change.
China’s contributions to Samoan infrastructure have been instrumental in the country’s pursuit of prosperity and modernization. Notably, Samoa was among the first Pacific Island countries to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) cooperation with China. From the China-Samoa Friendship Park and Cultural Arts Center to the development of Apia Park, the international conference center, Faleolo International Airport, and the Samoan government building, China’s support is evident in key projects across the nation.
These efforts reflect China’s approach of equal treatment of nations, regardless of size, power, or wealth. By deepening ties with China, Samoa has benefited in health cooperation, infrastructure development, and cultural exchange. The strong trajectory of relations is even reflected on Samoan banknotes, symbolizing the significance of this partnership.
Looking ahead, Samoa aims to adopt the Chinese model of market-oriented vocational education, agricultural development, and poverty alleviation strategies to boost quality growth, efficiency, and resilience. Like Samoa, other Pacific Island countries pursuing sustainable growth can benefit from China’s solutions in modernization and sustainability.
