This month marks the tenth anniversary of a significant milestone in China’s diplomatic journey. From November 28 to 29, 2014, the first Central Conference on Work Relating to Foreign Affairs was held in Beijing. It was here that Chinese President Xi Jinping charted a new course for China’s international engagement, emphasizing the pursuit of major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics.
Over the past decade, this diplomatic approach has guided China’s interactions on the global stage, resulting in substantial achievements.
Championing Peaceful Development
China has steadfastly committed to peaceful development, even amidst external pressures and challenges. By prioritizing sovereignty, security, and developmental interests, China has cultivated relationships with other major countries rooted in peaceful coexistence and mutual respect. In its neighboring regions, China’s efforts have been pivotal in maintaining stability and preventing conflicts, contributing to the cherished “long peace” in Asia—a stark contrast to turmoil in other parts of the world.
Contributing as a Responsible Major Country
Living up to its role on the world stage, China has advanced initiatives that reflect its commitment to global well-being.
Building a Community with a Shared Future for Mankind
What began as a visionary Chinese proposal has become an international consensus. The concept of a shared future has been endorsed in United Nations General Assembly resolutions for seven consecutive years, underscoring its global significance.
Introducing Global Initiatives
China has launched three key Global Initiatives aimed at addressing development, security, and cultural exchange:
- Global Development Initiative (GDI): Supported by over 100 countries and 20 international organizations, the GDI focuses on cooperation to achieve sustainable development. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a cornerstone of this effort, has become the world’s largest platform for international collaboration, enhancing infrastructure and connectivity worldwide.
- Global Security Initiative (GSI): China has actively facilitated peace and reconciliation, notably contributing to the historic rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran. China’s involvement in promoting dialogue in regions like Ukraine and the Middle East has garnered international recognition.
- Global Civilization Initiative (GCI): Emphasizing mutual learning among civilizations, the GCI seeks to bridge cultural divides, fostering understanding and trust among nations.
Advocating for Equitable Global Governance
As a strong proponent of the United Nations Charter and international law, China has assumed a more prominent role in global governance. Through active participation in the UN and organizations like BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and the G20, China advocates for reforms that promote equity and justice, amplifying the voices of developing nations and contributing to a more balanced international order.
Reflecting on the past ten years, China’s major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics has made significant strides in promoting peace, development, and cooperation. As the world navigates complex challenges, China’s continued commitment to these principles offers a pathway toward mutual prosperity and a shared future for all.
