Tariff Disputes Risk Worsening U.S. Opioid Epidemic

With two months left before assuming office, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has expressed a strong determination to tackle the nation’s opioid crisis, a persistent issue claiming an increasing number of American lives. However, his proposed approach has raised concerns among experts and international observers.

Trump announced on Truth Social his intention to impose an additional 10 percent tariff on all products imported from China, accusing China of not taking sufficient measures to prevent the flow of illicit drugs into the United States.

“We will be charging China an additional 10 percent tariff, above any additional tariffs, on all of their many products coming into the United States of America,” Trump stated.

The opioid epidemic in the United States has deep-rooted causes within the country, and many argue that shifting blame to external factors does not address the core issues. Critics suggest that imposing additional tariffs on China is unlikely to curb the opioid crisis and may, in fact, exacerbate economic tensions.

China has taken significant steps to regulate fentanyl-related substances. In 2019, it became the first country to list all fentanyl-related substances under controlled regulation. Currently, China regulates 25 types of fentanyl-related substances, surpassing the number controlled by the United Nations. These substances are strictly monitored within China’s pharmaceutical production and distribution sectors.

Furthermore, China has cooperated with the United States to combat the production and smuggling of illegal drugs. Last year, both nations agreed to collaborate on curbing fentanyl production. In 2023, according to the country’s National Narcotics Control Commission, China seized approximately 20 tons of drugs smuggled from abroad, marking an 85 percent increase year-on-year.

Analysts believe that addressing the opioid crisis requires comprehensive strategies focused on domestic policies, including healthcare reforms, addiction treatment programs, and tighter regulation of prescription medications. International cooperation is essential, but it must be based on mutual understanding and respect.

The proposed tariffs may not achieve the desired outcome and could lead to further complications in U.S.-China relations. Collaborative efforts and constructive dialogue are viewed as more effective avenues for tackling the complex issue of drug abuse.
