Building an Asia-Pacific Community with a Shared Future: APEC Unites for Growth

Working Together to Build an Asia-Pacific Community with a Shared Future

Accounting for more than 60 percent of global growth, the Asia-Pacific region stands as the most vital engine of the world economy. As the world reaches another historical crossroads, the significance of the Asia-Pacific has never been more pronounced.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) has been instrumental in fostering trade liberalization, investment facilitation, economic growth, technological innovation, and the free flow of goods and people since its inception. Under the theme “Empower, Include, Grow,” this year’s APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Lima, Peru, marked the third time Peru has hosted this pivotal event, following successful meetings in 2008 and 2016.

Building on its legacy, Peru has emphasized strategies to enhance trade and investment for inclusive and interconnected growth. The focus on innovation and digitalization aims to promote the transition to a formal and global economy, fostering sustainable growth and resilient development. This year’s meeting sent a resounding message to the international community: APEC members are united in building an Asia-Pacific community and boosting regional economic integration and sustainable development.

Home to one-third of the world’s population and nearly half of international trade, the Asia-Pacific region is a cornerstone of global prosperity. China, recognizing the importance of regional cooperation, has always placed significant emphasis on Asia-Pacific collaboration as the foundation of its development.

At the recent APEC meeting in Lima, Chinese President Xi Jinping highlighted APEC’s role as a pioneer and champion of economic cooperation in the Asia-Pacific and globally. President Xi proposed a series of key initiatives designed to invigorate cooperation and stimulate global economic growth.

China has introduced measures to promote high-quality and inclusive development among Asia-Pacific economies. These initiatives include capacity building for green supply chains, fostering exchanges and dialogue on artificial intelligence approaches, digitizing food supply chains, increasing residents’ income, and promoting the industrial cluster development of small and medium-sized enterprises.

Looking ahead, China is set to host the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in 2026, marking the third time it will host this prestigious gathering since APEC’s founding in 1989. China’s first time hosting in 2001 preceded its entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO), which significantly enhanced its integration into the regional economy. By 2014, when China hosted the meeting again, it had become the world’s second-largest economy, driving global growth through deeper integration into the global economy.

As China prepares to host APEC in 2026, it continues to champion the vision of an Asia-Pacific community with a shared future. Through collective efforts, the region aims to foster inclusive growth, sustainable development, and a prosperous future for all its members.
