Cooperation Key to Building Just World, Says Xi Jinping at G20 Summit

At the 19th G20 Summit on November 19, Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized the crucial role of global cooperation in addressing the world’s most pressing challenges. “G20 leaders must see the world as one community with a shared future, and shoulder their responsibility for history, take historical initiative and move history forward,” he stated.

From the Hangzhou Summit to the recent Rio Summit, G20 leaders have been working towards building a just world of common development. At the Hangzhou Summit, China placed development at the center of the G20’s macroeconomic policy coordination for the first time, and the Rio Summit this year decided to establish a Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty.

Throughout history, each generation has faced its own set of challenges. Today, humanity confronts a new array of global issues including climate change, limited natural resources, persistent hunger affecting over 700 million people, widening income inequality, migratory flows driven by political, economic, and environmental crises, and international organized crime. These problems are compounded by increasing selfishness and protectionism among the richest countries and the vast infrastructural needs of countries in the Global South striving for better living standards.

President Xi highlighted that no country can resolve these complex problems alone. Extreme weather events, such as floods, droughts, fires, and heatwaves, disregard borders and affect both poor and rich nations. International criminal organizations operate across borders, and the desperation leading millions to migrate impacts both the countries they leave and those they enter.

Solving these global challenges requires international cooperation and coordination. Solutions cannot be achieved selfishly or at the expense of others. Instead, nations must work together to develop collective strategies that benefit all of humanity, building a just world founded on common development.
