As the 2024 World Science and Technology Development Forum (WSTDF) commences in Beijing, China’s role in global science and technology leadership takes center stage. Bringing together over 120 international guests from 28 countries, this year’s forum highlights how China’s innovations are influencing the world.
From artificial intelligence (AI) to renewable energy, China’s advancements are transcending borders, creating tangible benefits for global economies and industries. A prominent example of China’s technological prowess is its leadership in 5G technology. Companies like Huawei and ZTE have been instrumental in developing and deploying 5G infrastructure worldwide.
By the end of 2022, China had installed more than 2.3 million 5G base stations, accounting for over 60 percent of the global total. Countries across Africa, Europe, and Asia are leveraging China’s 5G expertise to modernize their telecommunications networks. In 2019, South Africa’s leading telecommunications provider, Rain, partnered with Huawei to launch Africa’s first commercial 5G network.
European nations like Switzerland have adopted Chinese 5G technology to enhance connectivity, enabling faster internet speeds, supporting the Internet of Things (IoT), and driving industrial automation. These advancements have propelled innovations in industries that rely on the speed and reliability of 5G, such as telemedicine, smart cities, and autonomous driving.
In the realm of renewable energy, China’s impact is equally significant. As the world’s largest producer of solar panels, China has dramatically reduced the cost of solar energy. Between 2010 and 2020, the price of solar panels fell by nearly 90 percent, primarily due to China’s mass production capabilities and technological advancements. This price reduction has enabled wider adoption of solar energy, particularly in developing nations.
Beyond 5G and solar energy, China’s commitment to innovation extends to AI, biotechnology, and electric vehicles (EVs). Chinese companies are at the forefront of AI research, contributing to advancements in machine learning and automation. In the EV sector, China is the largest market and producer, fostering global growth in sustainable transportation.
China’s Belt and Road Initiative also facilitates international collaboration in science and technology. Through partnerships and investments, China is aiding infrastructure development and technological progress in participating countries, fostering shared growth and innovation.
The global impact of China’s innovations underscores the interconnectedness of today’s world. As nations collaborate and share technological advancements, global challenges such as climate change, healthcare, and digital transformation can be more effectively addressed.
