Madagascar’s President Embraces China’s Zero-Tariff Policies at FOCAC Summit

Madagascar’s President Andry Nirina Rajoelina has hailed China’s new zero-tariff policy as a transformative opportunity for his country’s agricultural and industrial sectors. Attending the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing from September 4 to 6, President Rajoelina expressed optimism about the potential boost to Madagascar’s economy.

China announced during the summit that all least-developed countries with diplomatic ties to China, including 33 African nations, will receive zero-tariff treatment for 100 percent of tariff lines. This policy is expected to enhance African agricultural exports to China through green channels for quarantine inspection, coordinated standards, and expedited customs clearance.

“China’s cutting-edge technology can bring about real change through agricultural transformation,” President Rajoelina remarked during an exclusive interview with CMG’s Zou Yun. He emphasized the significance of hybrid rice technology in addressing food security and improving crop yields in Madagascar.

During his visit, President Rajoelina traveled to Hunan Province, where he visited the Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center and the Longping Rice Park. The focus on hybrid rice technology underscores Madagascar’s commitment to modernizing its agricultural sector.

“We welcome Chinese companies to come along and contribute to Madagascar’s industrialization,” the president added. His invitation highlights the broader scope of cooperation envisioned between Madagascar and China, extending beyond agriculture to include industrial development.

The zero-tariff policy and technological collaboration are poised to strengthen ties between Madagascar and China, fostering economic growth and development. As part of the African nations set to benefit from these initiatives, Madagascar is positioning itself to seize new opportunities in trade and innovation.
