ASEAN Summits in Vientiane to Focus on Connectivity and Resilience

From October 8 to 11, the vibrant city of Vientiane, Laos will host the 44th and 45th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summits and related meetings. With over 20 sessions planned, leaders from ASEAN member states, dialogue partners, and representatives from more than 30 countries and international organizations will convene under the theme “ASEAN: Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience.”

In a world facing shifting geopolitical landscapes and complex regional challenges, ASEAN recognizes the imperative of maintaining its central role and strengthening internal unity. The upcoming summits aim to bolster solidarity among member nations, promoting cooperation to ensure that ASEAN continues to be a pivotal force in addressing regional and international issues.

The focus on connectivity and resilience underscores the commitment to building an interconnected ASEAN community. By enhancing physical, institutional, and people-to-people linkages, ASEAN strives to narrow development gaps among its members, ensuring inclusive growth where no country is left behind. The discussions will center on accelerating community-building efforts, deepening cooperative relationships with partners, and tackling common concerns.

A significant highlight of the summits is the anticipated verification of Timor-Leste’s progress toward becoming a full member of ASEAN. Member states have previously agreed to support Timor-Leste in meeting the criteria outlined in the roadmap for accession, signaling a commitment to expanding and strengthening the ASEAN family.

ASEAN’s resilience and adaptability are evident as it continues to maintain economic growth and plays an essential role in regional supply chains. The summits will serve as a platform to formulate the Post-2025 Vision, focusing on narrowing internal economic disparities, implementing the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and fostering a more inclusive and coordinated community.

As the region navigates the challenges and opportunities of the times, the theme of enhancing connectivity and resilience reflects a collective aspiration for unity and strength. The outcomes of the Vientiane summits are expected to chart a course for a more integrated and robust ASEAN, capable of contributing significantly to regional stability and prosperity.
