At the 2024 World Trade Organization (WTO) Open Forum in Geneva, senior media practitioners from the Global South gathered to discuss strategies for amplifying their narratives on the global stage. Hosted by CGTN, the roundtable brought together voices from Nigeria, South Africa, and other nations to address the persistent biases in Western portrayals of Africa.
“Too often, Africa is depicted solely through the lenses of poverty and disease,” remarked a media executive from Nigeria. “It’s time we take control of our story and showcase the beauty, diversity, and potential that our continent holds.”
Participants emphasized the need for louder voices to “sell” the greatness of Africa to the world. By promoting positive stories and highlighting successes, they aim to shift the global perception and challenge stereotypes.
The conversation also delved into solutions for easing poverty across the continent. Open and fair trade was identified as a key factor in driving economic growth and development. “Fair trade practices can empower our local industries and create opportunities for our people,” noted a South African media leader.
The forum underscored the importance of collaborative efforts among Global South nations to redefine narratives and promote equitable trade. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, these media practitioners are committed to ensuring that Africa’s true story is heard loud and clear.
