The 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) has commenced in Beijing, marking a significant milestone in the strengthening of ties between China and African nations. In an exclusive interview with CGTN’s Tian Wei, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres highlighted the pivotal role of China-Africa cooperation as a symbol of South-South collaboration.
Guterres emphasized that the partnership between China and Africa provides vital opportunities for the continent’s development. “China-Africa cooperation is a shining example of how South-South cooperation can effectively bridge gaps and promote sustainable development,” he said.
The UN chief noted that through initiatives focused on infrastructure development, educational advancement, and assistance in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), China is aiding African countries in overcoming critical challenges. “By investing in infrastructure, we are not only building roads and bridges but also connecting communities and economies,” Guterres remarked.
Education was highlighted as a key area where China-Africa cooperation is making a significant impact. “Education empowers individuals and transforms societies,” Guterres stated. “China’s support in enhancing educational opportunities in Africa is essential for driving innovation and fostering long-term growth.”
The Secretary-General also underscored the importance of China’s role in assisting African nations to implement the SDGs. “Achieving the SDGs requires collective action and shared responsibility,” he said. “China’s commitment to supporting Africa in this endeavor is crucial for creating a more equitable and sustainable future.”
The FOCAC summit brings together leaders from China and African countries to discuss strategies for deepening cooperation and addressing common challenges. The themes of this year’s summit focus on economic development, health, and environmental sustainability.
Guterres concluded by expressing optimism about the outcomes of the summit. “I believe that the decisions made here will have a profound impact on the lives of millions of people across Africa,” he said. “Together, we can build a better world where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.”
