Timor-Leste President’s First Visit Since Taking Office
José Ramos-Horta, President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste and one of its founding fathers, embarked on a significant state visit to China from July 28 to 31. This marked his first trip to China since assuming office in 2022 and the first state visit by a Timor-Leste president since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2002.
Deepening Bilateral Relations
During his visit, President Ramos-Horta met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, expressing high appreciation for Xi’s visionary concept of building a community with a shared future for mankind. He emphasized the importance of this vision in fostering global cooperation and solidarity.
“We highly value China’s approach to international relations, which focuses on mutual respect and win-win cooperation,” Ramos-Horta remarked.
Embracing the Belt and Road Initiative
The Timor-Leste leader voiced his enthusiasm for deepening cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). He highlighted the potential benefits for his nation, including infrastructure development, economic growth, and enhanced connectivity with the broader Asian region.
“The Belt and Road Initiative presents tremendous opportunities for Timor-Leste. We look forward to collaborating closely with China to realize shared prosperity,” he stated.
China Viewed as a Partner, Not a Threat
Addressing concerns about China’s rising global influence, President Ramos-Horta dismissed the notion of China as a threat. “Quite the contrary,” he insisted. “We see China as a valuable partner in our journey towards development and in addressing regional challenges.”
He underscored the importance of strong bilateral ties and mutual understanding in promoting peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region.
Strengthening Friendship and Cooperation
The visit signifies a milestone in China–Timor-Leste relations, building upon two decades of diplomatic engagement. Both nations are poised to enhance collaboration across various sectors, including trade, investment, and cultural exchanges.
“Our friendship with China is rooted in mutual trust and shared aspirations. We are committed to working together for the betterment of our people,” Ramos-Horta concluded.
