Guinea-Bissau’s President Umaro Sissoco Embaló recently visited China from July 9 to 13, marking a significant step in the long-standing relationship between the two nations. Celebrating forty years of diplomatic ties, the two countries have seen an expansion in cooperation and commercial opportunities, especially since Guinea-Bissau joined the Belt and Road Initiative in November 2021.
In an exclusive interview during his visit, President Embaló emphasized the crucial role China has played in Guinea-Bissau’s nation-building efforts. “China has always supported Guinea-Bissau, playing an important role in our nation-building,” he stated, highlighting the traditional partnership that dates back to the beginning of Guinea-Bissau’s national liberation struggle.
The partnership has yielded substantial benefits for Guinea-Bissau’s infrastructure, transportation, electricity, agriculture, and healthcare sectors. With China’s support, vital developments have been made to improve the quality of life for the people of Guinea-Bissau. The agricultural sector, in particular, has seen growth as more produce reaches China’s consumer market. President Embaló believes that “maintaining close cooperation with China is crucial” for his country’s continued development.
He also expressed high appreciation for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s global initiatives, noting their positive impact on addressing crises and political challenges. “These initiatives help us see how to truly overcome crises and continued political turmoil,” he remarked.
The strengthening of ties between China and Guinea-Bissau reflects a broader trend of cooperative relations within the Belt and Road Initiative, offering new opportunities for economic growth and cultural exchange. As both nations look to the future, their partnership serves as a testament to the benefits of collaboration and mutual support in the global community.
