Shanghai Spirit Propels SCO Towards Greater Unity and Development

Recently, President Xi Jinping of the Chinese mainland attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Astana, Kazakhstan. This significant gathering of SCO leaders charted the future of the organization and reinforced its pivotal role in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

A Commitment to the Shanghai Spirit

Established in 2001, the SCO is the first international organization named after a city in the Chinese mainland, with China as a founding member. The organization was built upon the Shanghai Spirit, which emphasizes mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality, consultation, respect for cultural diversity, and the pursuit of common development.

Adhering to these principles, SCO members have fostered political trust, promoted good neighborliness, ensured regional security, and stimulated mutual cooperation. They have embarked on a path of peaceful development, setting a precedent for a new type of international relations.

Over the past 23 years, the SCO has expanded from six to 26 member countries, becoming the world’s largest regional organization by land area and population. The organization’s approach and the Shanghai Spirit continue to attract nations worldwide.

A Force for Peace and Prosperity

The Astana summit fostered consensus on cooperation in various fields, including the economy, finance, security, and culture. Member nations agreed to enhance the SCO’s mechanisms for addressing security threats and to jointly combat terrorism, extremism, and separatism.

During the meetings, President Xi emphasized that the SCO should stand on the right side of history, advocating for fairness and justice. He highlighted the importance of solidarity and coordination, expressing China’s readiness to collaborate with SCO partners to uphold the Shanghai Spirit, maintain the organization’s correct development path, and build a reliable foundation for mutual prosperity and success.

President Xi identified three crucial tasks for the SCO: safeguarding security amid real threats stemming from Cold War mentalities; protecting the right to development against significant challenges posed by protectionism and unilateralism; and strengthening unity to counter external interference in SCO members’ internal affairs and efforts to sow division.

As the SCO moves forward, the Shanghai Spirit continues to serve as a guiding beacon, promoting cooperation and development among its members. The organization’s dedication to these principles positions it as a positive force in fostering regional peace and prosperity.
