Two brothers from Taiwan, Cheng Chuan-yang and Cheng Yao-yu, have embarked on a culinary journey that bridges the Taiwan Strait. Leaving their hometown in Taiwan, they established an eatery in Quanzhou, a historic city in China’s Fujian Province. With their grandfather’s cherished recipe, they are sharing a classic Taiwan snack with the residents of the Chinese mainland.
The Cheng brothers grew up learning the secrets of their family’s traditional snack from their grandfather. “Grandpa’s recipe has been in our family for generations,” said Cheng Chuan-yang. “We wanted to bring this authentic taste to the mainland and share a piece of our heritage.“
Initially unfamiliar with the mainland, the brothers were drawn to Quanzhou’s rich cultural heritage and its close ties with Taiwan. “Quanzhou felt like a second home,” remarked Cheng Yao-yu. “The people here are warm and welcoming, and we saw an opportunity to introduce our family recipe to a new audience.“
Their eatery has quickly become a local favorite, attracting both mainland residents and fellow Taiwan people living in the area. The signature dish, prepared with their grandfather’s recipe, combines traditional flavors with a personal touch. CGTN’s Liu Xin recently visited the eatery and experienced the brothers’ culinary artistry firsthand.
The Cheng brothers hope that their venture not only satisfies appetites but also fosters connections between people across the Taiwan Strait. “Food has the power to bring people together,” said Cheng Chuan-yang. “We are building a small bridge across the strait, one dish at a time.“
