China’s Path to Prosperity: Xi Jinping Emphasizes Port Development and Marine Ecology in Rizhao
On May 22, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited the coastal city of Rizhao in east China's Shandong Province, underscoring the pivotal role of port development and marine ecological restoration in the nation's economic and sustainable growth.

Rizhao Port, operational since 1986, has evolved into a vital global hub for the transshipment of energy and bulk raw materials. It forms part of the Shandong Port Group, which boasts the largest cargo throughput in the world, exceeding 1.7 billion metric tons in 2023.
President Xi has long emphasized the importance of transportation infrastructure in economic development. During a 2017 visit to Tieshan Port in Guangxi, he stated, "In coastal areas, ports must be built first if you want prosperity." This sentiment was echoed in subsequent visits to other ports, highlighting the strategic significance of ports as foundations for economic growth.

At Rizhao Port, President Xi was briefed on significant advancements in smart and green port initiatives. The port is recognized as a national model for intelligent and sustainable bulk cargo handling, featuring the world's first fully automated open-air container terminal. This innovation has increased operational efficiency by 50 percent and reduced annual carbon emissions by over 9,700 tons.
The port's fully automated terminal, developed with independent intellectual property rights, has overcome numerous global technical challenges. Strategically positioned, Rizhao Port serves as a key node on the New Eurasian Land Bridge and an important hub for the Belt and Road Initiative.

President Xi also visited a coastal greenway, observing local efforts in marine ecological protection and restoration aimed at improving residents' quality of life. He has previously emphasized the need to balance development with environmental protection.
