Hungary and China Elevate Ties Amid ‘Eastern Opening’ Strategy

Hungary and China have taken a significant step in strengthening their bilateral relations, elevating their ties to an “all-weather comprehensive strategic partnership.” This development coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations and follows Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Hungary from May 5 to 10, marking his first European tour in five years.

During the visit, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to collaborate on key infrastructure projects, including the construction of the Budapest-Belgrade railway. They are also exploring cooperation in the nuclear industry, signaling a deepening of economic and technological ties under Hungary’s “Eastern Opening” strategy.

In an exclusive interview with CMG’s Zou Yun for the “Leaders Talk” series, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán shared insights into how this strategy has benefited both nations. “Our ‘Eastern Opening’ policy has allowed Hungary to forge stronger economic connections with Asia, particularly with China, which has been instrumental in diversifying our trade and investment portfolio,” Orbán stated.

As Hungary prepares to assume the rotating Presidency of the European Union in July 2024, Orbán emphasized the country’s unique political and ideological stance within the EU. He highlighted the importance of sovereign decision-making and fostering relationships that serve national interests.

“The world needs strong leaders now more than ever,” Orbán remarked, expressing concern over the internationalization of the conflict in Ukraine. He criticized efforts to escalate tensions and underscored the necessity for diplomatic solutions. “Peace, harmony, and cooperation are better than war,” he said, praising China’s role as a force for peace and its Belt and Road Initiative as a catalyst for global cooperation.

Orbán’s sentiments reflect a broader aspiration for stability and prosperity through collaboration. The elevated partnership between Hungary and China exemplifies a mutual commitment to these values, setting a precedent for international relations rooted in respect and shared goals.
