Hungary Strengthens Partnership with China Ahead of Xi Jinping’s State Visit

As Hungary and China commemorate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, Chinese President Xi Jinping is set to pay a state visit to Hungary from May 8 to 10. The visit is expected to elevate bilateral ties, with at least 16 new agreements poised to deepen cooperation between the two nations.

In an exclusive interview with CMG’s Zou Yun, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó highlighted the significance of the upcoming visit and the robust economic, trade, and cultural connections between Hungary and China. “We are great fans of the Belt and Road Initiative,” Szijjártó stated, emphasizing Hungary’s commitment to independent policy-making and its enthusiasm for collaborative projects.

One of the flagship endeavors under the Belt and Road framework is the China-built Belgrade-Budapest railway, a critical infrastructure project enhancing connectivity in the region. Szijjártó expressed optimism about the progress of this initiative, viewing it as a testament to the fruitful partnership between Hungary and China.

Addressing discussions in the West regarding “de-risking” with China, the foreign minister refuted the notion, underscoring Hungary’s strategic approach to international relations. He also dismissed allegations concerning China’s “overcapacity,” instead highlighting the mutual benefits of cooperation, particularly in emerging sectors.

“We look forward to reaping the dividends of our partnership, especially in electric vehicles and green technology,” Szijjártó remarked. He underscored the importance of collaboration in these fields, which align with global efforts toward sustainable development.

The forthcoming state visit by President Xi Jinping is anticipated to open new horizons for Hungary-China relations, fostering deeper understanding and collaboration. As both nations prepare to sign multiple agreements, the visit symbolizes a shared commitment to advancing common goals and strengthening ties.
