China and France Celebrate 60 Years of Diplomatic Relations, Embrace Future Cooperation
Sixty years ago, General Charles de Gaulle made a bold move by establishing diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level between France and China, defying pressure from the Western bloc. In a visionary statement, he declared, “Indeed it is clear that France must be able to hear China directly and also to make herself heard by China.” This courageous act laid the foundation for a strong partnership that resonates to this day.
In January, commemorating the 60th anniversary of these diplomatic ties, President Xi Jinping delivered a speech emphasizing the enduring “China-France spirit.” This spirit is characterized by independence, mutual understanding, foresight, and mutual benefit leading to win-win cooperation. These principles have propelled China-France relations to the forefront of China’s engagements with Western nations, enabling both countries to navigate changing international landscapes successfully.
Over the past six decades, China and France have cultivated fruitful cooperation across various fields, including nuclear energy, high-speed rail, aerospace, agriculture, and healthcare. These collaborations have brought tangible benefits to the peoples of both nations, fostering economic growth and cultural exchange.
Today, both countries stand at a new historical starting point in their national development. China is accelerating the creation of a new development pattern and pursuing high-quality growth. Key priorities include developing new productive forces, modernizing the industrial system, revitalizing rural areas, and fostering coordinated regional development. Similarly, France is addressing pressing challenges such as energy transition, digital transformation, and an aging population.
There is a significant opportunity for China and France to deepen cooperation in emerging areas like artificial intelligence, digital economy, green manufacturing, sustainable development, and the silver economy. Enhancing agricultural cooperation, symbolized by “from French farms to Chinese tables,” can further solidify bonds across industrial chains, facilitate capital flows, and promote robust personnel exchanges.
President Xi’s upcoming visit is expected to inject new impetus into China-France cooperation across various fields. As both nations explore new avenues of collaboration, their partnership will not only benefit their own development but also contribute positively to global peace and prosperity.
