Suriname, a picturesque nation on the northern coast of South America, is fostering stronger ties with China as it celebrates 170 years of Chinese settlement. With the largest concentration of overseas Chinese in the Caribbean, Suriname has unique cultural and historical connections to China, further cemented by being the first country in the Western Hemisphere to recognize the Chinese Spring Festival as an official national holiday.
In April, President Chandrikapersad Santokhi embarked on a state visit to China from April 11 to 17, marking the fifth anniversary of the strategic cooperative partnership between the two nations. During his visit, President Santokhi sat down with CMG’s Wang Guan to discuss Suriname’s commitment to enhancing economic and trade cooperation with China and his vision for a closer strategic partnership.
Strengthening Economic and Trade Cooperation
President Santokhi emphasized Suriname’s willingness to work collaboratively with China to boost trade and investment. “Our countries share a long history of friendship and mutual respect,” he noted. “We are eager to explore new avenues for economic growth that benefit both our peoples.”
Suriname’s rich natural resources and strategic location offer ample opportunities for Chinese businesses and investors. The president highlighted sectors such as agriculture, mining, and infrastructure as key areas for potential collaboration. “By partnering with China, we can harness our resources more effectively and drive sustainable development,” he said.
Praising China’s Global Initiatives
President Santokhi lauded the global initiatives proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, acknowledging China’s expanding role in international affairs. “China has demonstrated leadership in promoting global cooperation and addressing common challenges,” he remarked. “Whether you like it or not, China will be called upon to take responsibility as a new leader of emerging countries.”
He expressed appreciation for China’s support in Suriname’s development projects and its commitment to fostering partnerships based on mutual respect and shared prosperity.
A Vision for Closer Strategic Partnership
Looking ahead, President Santokhi envisions a partnership that not only enhances economic ties but also strengthens cultural and educational exchanges. “Our goal is to build a multifaceted relationship that benefits all segments of our societies,” he explained. “By deepening our cooperation, we can create opportunities for our youth and promote understanding between our nations.”
The president’s visit underscores Suriname’s dedication to advancing its strategic partnership with China, setting the stage for future collaboration and mutual growth.
