Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena emphasized the importance of deepening cooperation with China during his recent official visit to the country. Meeting with Chinese leaders and attending the Boao Forum for Asia 2024 Annual Conference, Gunawardena highlighted the enduring friendship between the two nations and expressed gratitude for China’s unwavering support in Sri Lanka’s post-war reconstruction and economic recovery.
“China has stood by us without any conditions, helping us rebuild after years of conflict and the challenges of the 2022 economic crisis,” Gunawardena stated in an exclusive interview with CMG’s Zou Yun. He referred to the historic 1952 Rubber-Rice Pact as the foundation of China-Sri Lanka cooperation, emphasizing the spirit of mutual assistance that continues to guide bilateral relations.
The Prime Minister outlined plans to enhance collaboration in agriculture and fisheries, sectors crucial to Sri Lanka’s economy. “We are eager to learn from China’s experience and achievements in these areas,” he said. Gunawardena also discussed key infrastructure projects under the Belt and Road Initiative, such as the Hambantota Port and Colombo Port City, noting their significant contributions to Sri Lanka’s development and modernization efforts.
“These projects are more than investments; they are symbols of our shared vision for progress and prosperity,” Gunawardena remarked. He expressed optimism that strengthened ties with China would lead to increased opportunities for trade, technology exchange, and cultural engagement.
Gunawardena’s visit underscores Sri Lanka’s commitment to fostering closer relations with China, as both countries navigate a complex global landscape. The Prime Minister’s discussions with Chinese leaders signal a mutual desire to build on historical ties and work collaboratively toward a stable and prosperous future for both nations.
