Antigua and Barbuda’s PM Gaston Browne on Climate Change and Strengthening Ties with China

Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister Gaston Browne is steering his nation through a complex web of global challenges. Known for its pristine white-sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters, Antigua and Barbuda is more than a picturesque tourist destination. Like many small island nations, it faces existential threats from climate change and the vulnerabilities of a globalized world.

In an exclusive interview with CMG’s Wang Guan on Leaders Talk, Prime Minister Browne delved into his country’s strategies for development and modernization amidst these challenges. He emphasized the significant impact of climate change on the nation’s economy and infrastructure, stating that rising sea levels and extreme weather events pose immediate risks to the well-being of his people.

Beyond environmental concerns, Prime Minister Browne highlighted the pivotal role of international partnerships in Antigua and Barbuda’s progress. As one of the first countries in the Eastern Caribbean to establish diplomatic relations with China, the nation has benefited from this long-standing relationship. Browne noted, “China has been instrumental in our economic development, especially through the Belt and Road Initiative, which has opened up new avenues for investment and infrastructure growth.”

He expressed admiration for President Xi Jinping, describing him as “the most impactful global leader,” and praised China’s global initiatives aimed at fostering shared prosperity. Addressing the so-called “debt trap” narrative, Prime Minister Browne dismissed these concerns, reaffirming his country’s commitment to the one-China policy and emphasizing that cooperation with China is based on mutual respect and benefit.

As Antigua and Barbuda navigates the complexities of modern challenges, Prime Minister Browne remains optimistic. He envisions a future where sustainable development and robust international partnerships drive the nation forward. “We are determined to build resilience and ensure a prosperous future for our people,” he affirmed.

The interview sheds light on the unique position of small island nations in the global arena and underscores the importance of collaboration in addressing shared challenges. For Antigua and Barbuda, the path ahead is shaped by a commitment to sustainability, modernization, and strong alliances.
