Xi Jinping and Ma Ying-jeou Meet to Enhance Cross-Strait Relations

Beijing, April 11 — Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, met with Ma Ying-jeou, former chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT), on April 10 in Beijing. This meeting marks their second encounter following a historic exchange in Singapore in 2015 and signifies a step forward in fostering peaceful relations across the Taiwan Strait.

Ma Ying-jeou is leading a delegation of young people from the Taiwan region on a visit to the Chinese mainland from April 1 to 11. During their stay, the delegation has visited historical sites such as the Great Wall and the Memorial Hall of the War of Chinese People’s Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, as well as prominent enterprises. These activities aim to deepen the understanding and connection between the youth of the Taiwan region and the Chinese mainland.

The meeting between Xi and Ma occurs amid a complex cross-strait situation. External forces, notably the United States, have been increasing their involvement in the Taiwan region, including approved arms sales and potential participation in military exercises like the Han Kuang Exercise. Additionally, recent summits between the United States, Japan, and the Philippines have raised concerns about efforts to contain China.

Meanwhile, separatist activities advocating for “Taiwan independence” have been on the rise. The current administration under Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen has taken actions that have escalated tensions, including responses to incidents like the ship collision on February 14 and criticism of Ma Ying-jeou’s visit to the mainland.

The Chinese mainland remains committed to peaceful reunification and the principle of “One Country, Two Systems.” The growing comprehensive strength of the mainland enhances its capacity to promote reunification and strengthens its influence among residents of Taiwan. The recent meeting underscores the shared heritage and bonds between compatriots on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Ma Ying-jeou’s visit and engagement with the mainland are seen as significant moves to promote peaceful exchanges and stability in the region. By facilitating interactions between young people from the Taiwan region and the mainland, the visit fosters mutual understanding and paves the way for future collaboration and harmony across the strait.
