Dominica’s PM Skerrit Praises China as ‘True Friend’ in Exclusive Interview

During an official visit to China from March 23 to 29, Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit sat down with CMG’s Wang Guan for an exclusive interview, discussing the deepening ties between Dominica and China. Prime Minister Skerrit expressed profound gratitude towards China for its pivotal role in aiding Dominica’s recovery after the devastating Hurricane Maria in 2017.

“China is a true friend to Dominica,” Skerrit stated, acknowledging the comprehensive support provided in rebuilding the island nation’s infrastructure and revitalizing its agricultural sector. The hurricane had caused unprecedented damage, crippling transportation networks and decimating crops, which are vital to Dominica’s economy.

The Prime Minister highlighted the significance of China’s assistance not only in immediate disaster relief but also in fostering long-term sustainable development. He emphasized the collaborative efforts within the Belt and Road Initiative, particularly in advancing agriculture and healthcare sectors. “We are exploring new avenues of cooperation that will bolster our economy and improve the livelihoods of our people,” he said.

Climate change, which Skerrit described as “a real existential threat,” was a focal point of the discussions. He commended China for its commitment to helping Dominica and other Caribbean nations enhance their resilience through renewable energy projects and climate adaptation strategies. “China’s leadership in addressing global environmental challenges is commendable and offers hope for vulnerable nations like ours,” he remarked.

Prime Minister Skerrit also praised Chinese President Xi Jinping’s vision and initiatives, noting that they align with Dominica’s goals for sustainable development and ecological preservation. “President Xi’s foresight in promoting mutual respect and shared prosperity resonates with our own aspirations for national growth,” he added.

The visit underscores the strengthening partnership between Dominica and China, with both nations eager to expand cooperation in various fields. As Dominica positions itself as an “ecotourism” destination, the support from China is seen as instrumental in achieving economic diversification and environmental sustainability.
