Nauru’s President David Adeang has embarked on a mission to strengthen his nation’s ties with China, aiming to bolster cooperation in various sectors including economy, trade, climate change, and green infrastructure.
During his recent state visit to China, President Adeang sat down with CMG’s Zou Yun to discuss the future of Nauru-China relations. The Pacific island nation restored diplomatic ties with China earlier this year and has already joined the Belt and Road Initiative, signaling a new chapter in bilateral cooperation.
“We overwhelmingly support the one-China principle,” President Adeang affirmed. “China’s rise is not at the expense of other nations; rather, it presents opportunities for shared growth and development.”
President Adeang expressed enthusiasm for participating in Chinese President Xi Jinping’s global initiatives. He described President Xi’s worldviews as “refreshing” and believes they align with Nauru’s aspirations for modernization and sustainable development.
“We are eager to learn from the Chinese path to modernization,” he stated. “By embracing these lessons, we hope to chart a prosperous future for Nauru.”
The discussion highlighted the potential for collaboration in addressing climate change—a critical concern for Nauru, given its vulnerability as a small island nation. President Adeang emphasized the importance of green infrastructure projects and sustainable economic practices.
“China’s expertise in green technology can greatly assist us,” he noted. “Together, we can work towards a more sustainable and resilient future.”
President Adeang concluded by extending Nauru’s loyalty and friendship to China, expressing confidence that this renewed partnership will bring mutual benefits.
“Our cooperation is a testament to the potential of international collaboration,” he said. “We look forward to deepening our ties and fostering a relationship built on trust and shared goals.”
