Benin’s Foreign Minister Visits China to Enhance Bilateral Ties

Beninese Foreign Minister Shegun Adjadi Bakari is paying an official visit to China from March 28 to April 1, at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.

This visit marks a significant step in strengthening the relationship between Benin and China, which spans over half a century. The bilateral ties between the two nations have been productive and continuously evolving, with Benin benefiting from China’s flagship initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative and the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

China has played a pivotal role in modernizing Benin’s agricultural sector, aiding the country in achieving food security through capacity building and the provision of agricultural machinery and equipment. Chinese private investment in Benin has also seen substantial growth, contributing to the development of infrastructure, including roads, communications, and water facilities, with investments totaling $536 million between 2000 and 2020.

The cooperation extends beyond infrastructure and agriculture. Education, healthcare, and vocational training programs have further solidified the partnership, empowering local communities and enhancing quality of life. Benin also benefits from duty-free access to the Chinese market for some of its products, such as raw cotton, soybeans, and vegetable residues, boosting its export economy.

With a population of around 14 million and abundant natural resources, Benin holds significant growth potential. The cooperative relationship with China offers opportunities to tap into untapped resources in the agricultural and industrial sectors, serving as a catalyst for the country’s development.

Foreign Minister Adjadi Bakari’s visit aims to further strengthen these evolving relations and accelerate development through enhanced cooperation. The meetings are expected to explore ways to expedite the implementation of existing agreements and identify new avenues for bilateral engagement, fostering mutual growth and prosperity.
