China’s southernmost province, Hainan, is poised to become an economic powerhouse as it constructs its free trade port with Chinese characteristics. Personally planned, deployed, and promoted by General Secretary Xi Jinping, this masterplan focuses on developing high-quality new productive forces, promoting low-carbon and green industries, and fostering sustainable lifestyles. These initiatives aim to transform Hainan into a world-class destination and a magnet for investors and visitors alike.
In an exclusive interview with Wang Guan for The Forefront, a special series by CGTN featuring talks on China’s governance with the country’s ministers and governors, Feng Fei, Secretary of Hainan’s CPC Provincial Committee, discussed the province’s main policies and initiatives to foster growth and boost economic development.
Feng Fei elaborated on Hainan’s strategy of “Four Pillars, Three Strengths, and Three Premium Service Sectors” to enhance the province’s quality, resilience, and competitiveness. He emphasized that the independent customs operations of the Hainan Free Trade Port will be a milestone in facilitating free trade on the island, significantly boosting economic activities and attracting global businesses.
“Our goal is to capitalize on Hainan’s unique location, pristine environment, and rich biodiversity,” Feng Fei explained. “We are pioneering multiple initiatives geared toward maximizing our strengths while protecting our invaluable natural assets.”
Hainan is also focusing on green industries, tourism, and infrastructure development. The province hosts world-famous exhibitions and events such as the Boao Forum for Asia and the China International Consumer Products Expo, which have enhanced its domestic and global reputation.
“By nurturing these sectors, Hainan is becoming a force to be reckoned with,” Feng Fei stated. “We are committed to creating a sustainable and prosperous future for our people and contributing to China’s overall development.”
The province’s ambitious plans reflect a broader vision of innovation and openness, positioning Hainan as a new frontier in China’s reform and opening-up. With strategic policies and a focus on sustainability, Hainan is set to play a significant role in Asia’s dynamic economic landscape.
